The details are considered - often minute - with delicate flourishes of gold and silver that appear imbued with motion and life... the metal appears to dance and glide around the stones, which are themselves set over foil to enhance their colour and brilliance. The band is fluted with tiny pierced crescents, two at each shoulder. Indeed, in a slightly macabre irony, an obsession with the Etruscans, Greeks, Romans et al. was one of the few points on which both the French Royals and the Revolutionary Government genuinely agreed. The transition to neoclassical was neatly illustrated by a series of porcelains gifted to Marie Antoinette by King Louis XVI, while the French Revolutionaries upheld the idea that imitation of antiquity would not only encourage refined taste amongst its citizens, but also help to maintain the nation's superiority on the global stage.

This ring was made in the 1790s but it was not made in France, nor the fledgling United States. English styles remained distinct from their continental rivals, and continued on a trajectory of refined ornamentation - drawing from the 'rational' elements of neoclassicism (proportion, geometry, form) in an attempt to curb the excesses of the preceding Rococo and Baroque. Tolkein’s The Lord of the Rings). Medieval viewers likely overlaid other associations onto such images of Christ’s wound. The change in the wound’s orientation from a diagonal slit to a vertical opening and the isolation of the wound as an almond-shaped device transform it into an image strongly reminiscent of medieval representations of the vulva and the vaginal opening. Similar imagery persists in modern visual culture, such as Judy Chicago’s 1979 installation The Dinner Party. This association of Christ’s side wound with female reproductive organs has connections with mystical writings that eroticized the body of Christ and that emphasized its nurturing and generative qualities." - Source

After all, this ring was made just as England welcomed its first Queen since Elizabeth 1. We chose a circa 1800 Georgian smoky quartz ring for this project - part of our Spells & Sigils collection of hand-engraved signet and posy rings. The smoky quartz displays a gorgeous peachy-brown hue, and it's set over foil to enhance its colour and brightness. We have added an intaglio carving to the large table facet: Cupid-Eros with his bow drawn, arrow poised to strike at some unsuspecting soul.

Cupid is the Roman god of love, desire, and attraction, often depicted, like we see here, as a cherubic baby with wings and a bow and arrow. He is thought to be the son of Venus, goddess of love and beauty, and Mars, god of war, which we’d argue is some pretty cool lineage. The Greeks called him Eros (and his parents Aphrodite and Ares) and imagined him as a beautiful and fully grown young man. The bow and arrow that often appears in his iconography represents his source of power: anyone shot by Cupid’s arrow is filled with an uncontrollable desire. Although his role in myths is mostly complementary, often appearing in the presence of Venus and other love gods as a catalyst for people to fall in love, the major exception is the tale of Cupid and Psyche…

Once upon a time there were three princesses. The eldest two were lovely enough to be admired everywhere, but the youngest was so entirely beautiful that many in the kingdom gave up the cult of Venus and worshiped the young girl instead. Her name was Psyche. Venus, as a vengeful and jealous goddess, could bear no rivalry so summoned her son, Cupid, and told him to use one of his arrows to make Psyche fall in love with a pig. Ever the dutiful son, Eros set off on his mission but as he drew his bow he accidentally scratched his arm on the tip of the arrow, gazed on Psyche, and fell madly in love with her. A long story then ensues, long and winding with many-a-plot-twist. A story that forms the foundation of many Western fairy tales, whereby Psyche is carried off to a magical castle with an invisible retinue to serve on her; jealous sisters; and impossible tasks like sorting grains of rice. It does ultimately have a happy ending though, with the couple reconciling and Cupid granting Psyche immortality so they can be wed as equals. This, along with Cupid’s other tales, has created an association between the god and the theme that ‘love conquers all’, which has led to him becoming somewhat of an icon of Valentine’s Day.

Part of Spells & Sigils, our collection of hand-engraved signet and posy rings.

Era: Georgian, circa 1800

Ring size: Q 1/2 or 8.5 US

Head: 12.3mm by 9.7mm

Stone: Smoky Quartz

Marks: None, tested as 9ct gold

Condition:

A majestic unicorn rears up on its hind legs as the setting sun blazes behind - a Unicorn in Splendour. The first written evidence of the creatures was provided by the Greek writer Ctesias in the 4th century BCE where he references a unicorn as a type of wild ass: “fleet of foot, having a horn a cubit and a half in length, and coloured white, red and black”. Later, Pliny the Elder wrote of a fierce animal called the ‘monokeros’, which has etymological links to ‘unicorn’, with the body of a horse and a single black horn projecting from the middle of its forehead. Obviously, in these cases we are witnessing a case of mistaken identity but these accounts were pieced together to create the myth of a single horned beast, which became known as the unicorn.

Later, in medieval Europe, the unicorn became a symbol of chivalry with the relationship between a knight and his female companion being compared to that between the unicorn and a virgin maiden, with the former becoming loving and docile in the latter’s presence. This, along with the belief that a unicorn’s horn could purify poisoned water, led to Christ himself being associated with the unicorn, with medieval artwork often depicting a unicorn as a symbol of Christ. In Celtic mythology, the unicorn was a symbol of purity and innocence, as well as masculinity and power. These qualities, as well as its associations of dominance and chivalry, made the unicorn an obvious choice as Scotland’s national animal, appearing on the Scottish royal coat of arms since the 12th century.

Part of Spells & Sigils, our collection of hand-engraved signet and posy rings.

Era: Vintage, 1956

Ring size: L 1/2 or 6 US

Head size: 13.1mm by 11.5mm

Stone: Bloodstone

Weight: 5.9 grams

Hallmarks, English, Birmingham, 9ct Gold, 1956, G&S Maker's Mark

Condition: Good vintage condition, light wear consistent with age

Gorgeous Victorian fancy-link chain made at the turn of the 20th century. His earliest sphere of influence was the doorway itself (ianua meaning “door” in Latin), but he gradually came to embody beginnings more broadly, as well as liminal or transitional spaces, much like Vesta.

Formally, Janus was worshipped in the month of Ianuarius—the month that bears his name—though the details of his cult are far less clearly documented than those of many other Roman gods. January itself appears to have been added very early in Rome’s history to an earlier ten-month calendar, perhaps under Etruscan influence. One of the most significant dates for Janus was January 9, when the Rex Sacrorum sacrificed a ram to him in the Regia. Rams are consistently linked with Janus elsewhere as well, including in the records of the Arval Brothers. Janus had no dedicated priesthood of his own and was instead closely associated with the Rex Sacrorum, who also offered a smaller sacrifice to him at the start of every month. Beyond these fixed observances, Janus received attention throughout the year, since many official rites to other gods required an opening invocation to him in his role as primus, the Beginner; correspondingly, Vesta closed the ceremonies as ultima.

The ring is crafted in 18 carat gold and dates from 1896 with Chester hallmarks inside the band.

Era: Victorian, 1896

Ring size: U 1/2 or 10.25 US.
