1920s Egyptian Revival Moses Basket Charm
An interesting Egyptian Revival style charm of a tiny (like, absurdly tiny) baby Moses tucked inside an enamelled basket. This particular piece represents a story, you probably already know, of a baby, born in Egypt to an enslaved mother, at a time when the Pharaoh was worried about an uprising. As a result, he ordered all baby boys born to the enslaved Israelite people to be drowned at birth. Moses' mother managed to hide him for a few weeks and then, when he became too big, placed him in a basket among the reeds on the bank of the River Nile. Moses was then found by the daughter of the Pharaoh who adopted him and brought him up in the Egyptian Royal household.
The discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 sparked a fresh wave of Egyptomania in Europe and the USA, with Egyptian themes both directly and indirectly inspiring the jewellery and fashions of the Art Deco period. Crafted in silver gilt with an enamelled desert scene on the lid with camel, rider, and a pyramid in the distance.

Condition
We offer detailed and accurate condition reports on each listing. These pieces are antique, vintage, or pre-loved and often over 100 years old so they're going to have lived a life. A healthy patina and the odd scuff or scrape is quite normal... it's part of their charm! Everything we present has been checked over by our jeweller and should be good for wear for many years to come (unless otherwise stated) but please remember to treat them with appropriate care and consideration for their age.
